Fire cider has long been a staple in traditional herbal medicine, renowned for its ability to ward off colds and flu, boost energy, and enhance overall health. This potent tonic combines the fiery kick of immune-boosting herbs with the power of elderberries, creating a natural remedy that’s as versatile as it is effective.
I grow my own elderberries here on the farm. So when we have an abundance, they typically find themselves being added to everything. My fire cider was one of those additions that I was pleasantly surprised by. Elderberry pairs so well with the amazing power of fire cider, making it even more of a food medicine powerhouse.

Variations of Fire Cider
One of the beauties of fire cider is its versatility. The base recipe can be adapted to meet specific health needs or taste preferences. Here are some common variations:
- For Enhanced Digestive Health: Add turmeric and fennel seeds to your fire cider for their digestive-supporting properties.
- For Extra Immune Support: Include echinacea, which is known for its powerful antiviral and immune-boosting effects. I also love adding rose hips to my elderberry fire cider because it’s a power house of vitamin C, and it turns my cider a beautiful purple!
- For Respiratory Relief: Mullein and thyme can be added to help with respiratory issues, making this variation particularly useful during cold and flu season.
- For a Milder Tonic: Reduce the amount of hot peppers or eliminate them altogether if you prefer a milder cider.
The key is to experiment and tailor the ingredients to suit your specific health goals and flavor preferences.

- ¼ teaspoon whole black pepper
- 2 cups apple cider vinegar with the mother
- ½ cup raw honey
Instructions
- Gather your dried elderberries, fresh rosehips, ginger, garlic, grapefruit zest, and cinnamon, then place them in a clean, sterilized 32 oz glass jar (about 4 cups).
- Pour in apple cider vinegar until the herbs are fully submerged and the jar is about three-quarters full.
- Secure the jar with a plastic lid (if using a metal lid, place a piece of parchment paper between the lid and the jar to prevent corrosion).
- Label the jar and store it in a warm, sunny spot for 4-5 weeks.
- Give the jar a gentle shake every few days to ensure the ingredients remain well-covered with liquid.
- After 4 weeks, strain the mixture through a fine strainer or cheesecloth, pressing to extract every last drop of the tonic.
- Stir in 1 cup of raw honey to balance the flavors, allowing the natural sweetness to mellow the blend.
- Taste, and if it’s still too tart, add a bit more honey until it suits your palate.

- You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less honey according to your taste.
